More pictures as a sort of before (the estate agents pictures) and after

The sitting room:

We got rid of the horrible brick fireplace and I made a box inside for the skybox/dvd/wii etc which goes with
the new ultraflat smarty pants tv . Oboviusly this is sealed above and vented just below the TV (vent is painted same as walls
to hide it a bit) . Also the dvd rack is one I threw together quickly on saturday from old bits of wood I had left over.

We replaced all the carpets as they were 'catty' and put in a bigger radiator as the old one was too small for the room.
Looking the other direction, two new book cases lead into the dining room.

More books :-)

We moved the overbed cupboards as I am paranoid about things falling on my head as I sleep
(I had a 3ft painting fall on me when I was asleep on the sofa as a child.... the skys falling in syndrome)
and turned another around to make just a single line along the wall.
Stripped the wall paper, painted and changed bed lights.

ERINS BEDROOM BEFORE:

AFTER:

Stripped all the wallpaper, and then STRIPPED the paint below the wallpaper as it had gone 'strange; painted.
New lights and carpet.

Rebuilt Erins bed as it didnt fit right (it used to be the other way round in the old house)

And before you say she hasn't enough cudderly toys you are missing the huge pile at the other end of the room.

She and andrea also have a 'craft' room where all there gubbins are kept (in the overhead cupboards recycled from the main bed)
plus a full height cupboard full of lego.

I'm still waiting for a splashback for the kitchen to complete that, and then I'll do some photos for there.

BTW just for the record we feel so freaking lucky combined with guilty at moving to if not a new dream
home, at least the best house we can ever expect to own and able to make it 'nice' before we moved in.
Hoping to stay here until we retire in 25 years time. The house is actually bigger than we need (4 bedrooms) because sooner or later
I will probably end up working from home full time, but at the moment we seem swamped in space.

Guilty because I know so many people (especially those under 30) in our country stand no chance of buying a house at all
because the whole property market is over inflated, and the buy to let market is strangling the younger generation
with high rent combined with keeping prices high. :gripe:

We were only able to afford this place because
a) we bought our old house 10 years ago just before things became totally stupid

b) we saved like hell. - no smoking / drinking only once a week (COD night!)/ very few meals or nights out or takeaways, 1 proper holiday in 9years)
Most of our days out involving walking with a picnic - and you can't really get much cheaper than that!
Although we are both on modest salaries (for graduates) £15 - 20K each before tax in that 10 years we saved £50K and thats thats not including
a car (4K), new boiler at the old house (£2K) , new roof at the old house (£6k)

c) low interest rates also meant we were able overpaid the mortgage by £200 -£400 a month meaning we had more equity
By the time we left , because we offsetted our savings against the mortgage, the interest on the mortgage a month was £4 -£10
So most of £700 a month mortgage payment was accumulating equity rather than if we had rented it would of all gone down the tube.

d) Although we paid for the house ourselves we had a parental contribution towards the new boiler for the new house, carpets and decorating.

e) We were able to port our old mortgage accross at very good rates with no fees, 1% above base rate lifetime tracker is pretty unbeatable in this market.

Oh Hanno, what an assumption to make, of course she knows which switch it is, she has just lulled you into a false sense of security to make you think she has no idea, she probably programs the time delay recording for the tele also :)

Don't feel guilty for doing the right thing, you did change your lifestyle for quite some time to save money, that is something the 'under 30' generation hardly do.

Very nice house and decoration :rockin:

Btw. the "later I will probably end up working from home full time" is something you should feel guilty about :tease:

Finally got the new splashback in the Kitchen last week, so this is now 'signed off' and finished.

BEFORE- the old kitchen:

AFTER: our new kitchen:

ImageImage

We reused most of the old cupboards just moving them into a better configuations for ourselves.
And put in new lighter coloured work surfaces, and new hob + cooker.
Its the cutting the holes for sinks/hob which is a pig, but we are happy with the result.
We now have far more cupboard space than at the old hous,e I've currently got 3 empty cupboards
so I might start to bulk buy to stock up food etc and save some pennies.

The other end of the room is a utility area - which again I had to move the sink and cut another hole.

Ah I'm glad some kindly Russian has come forward and taken the time to start an account just to tell me I'm speaking rubbish...
but I already have a daughter who is a professional at doing this job!

Anyway here comes some snaps of how the garden is getting on.

The BEFORE picture:

And now after about 4 weekends work, a new home for the cacti:

We did have a bit of cacti cull when we moved, sold some, binned some, just kept the best.
Down from about 300 when I was an avid collector to less than a 100 now.
