Tutorial: Flashing eyes.

Postby [FnG] Lert » Wed Nov 24, 2004 9:15 pm

As per request, here a simple tutorial how to make flashing eyes, like these:

Image

I will use Photoshop 7 and Paint Shop Pro 7 for this.

First, make a simple base avatar that you want to animate with flashing eyes:

Image

Load the picture into photoshop. Then, in the top menu, select Filter -> Render -> Lens flare, to get the following screen:

Image

Adjust the Brightness to a very low level, 20% or smaller, and position the flare in the left eye. Then repeat for the right eye, same brightness.

Image

Save the resulting file under a different filename (avatar2.bmp for example)

Repeat the above steps, but with a slightly brighter lense flare, again in both eyes:

Again, save under a different file name.

Repeat one more time. Slightly brighter flares, different filename:

Image

You now have four 'frames' to make your animation with.

Next, load up Animation Shop. You can find it in your PSP7 folder on your harddisk, named anim.exe.

Go to the top menu, File -> Animation wizard. If all goes well, you should get the following screen:

Image

(Note that I have a dutch version of this software and not an english one. I'll try to translate what buttons to press)

All the settings here are alright, for now. Click Next, and Next again when it asks for opaque or transparent canvas color. All this is not important right now. Another Next will bring you to the following screen:

Image
(See the dutch buttons and the english dialog options ? Dutch software is weird like that .. :D)

Here, you can select: How many times you want the animation to repeat. Selecting the top most option will loop the animation indefinately. Selecting the one underneath will give you the option to choose how often it should loop.

Underneath that is the duration per frame. I've set it to 8 (hundredths of a second) in my example. Just set it to something you think would work, you can change it later.

Click Next.

The following screen will allow you to Add Images to your animation. Click the Add Image button. In the next dialog, load the first frame of your animation. The frame you started with, the one without lens flare in the eyes.

Add another image, the one with the softest lens flare of all. Add another, the slightly brighter one. Add the brightest one. Then add the slightly brighter one again, and finally add the one with the softest lense flare of all, so your screen looks like this:

Image

Click Next, then click Complete. Your screen should look something like this:

Image

You can now select each individual frame by leftclicking it so it has a blue border, then rightclicking it, and selecting Frame Properties in the menu that appears. Chose a longer time period for the first of all frames. Say, 250 (that will let the first frame play for two and a half seconds before beginning the next one)

Select the second frame, frame properties, and give it a very short time, like 5 or something.

Select the third frame, frame properties, also give it a very short time, like 5 or something.

Select the fourth frame, this should be the brightest, and give it a slightly longer time, like 10 for example.

Select the fifth frame, also give it a time like 10.

Finally the last frame, give it a slightly longer time like 15.

The differences in time will make that the eyes stay dim for two-and-a-half seconds, then light up quickly and grow dim again slightly slower, for the best effect.

To view your animation, flick on the 'view animation' button on the top-most menu of buttons, second one from the far right. It looks like a filmstrip with small arrows in it.

Change it to your liking, then file -> save, a few more Next's and you're done. :D

Not bad :) Could work on the timings a bit to make it more fluid, but it's a good try. :)
