Time for ...

Postby [FnG] Hanno » Mon Feb 28, 2011 1:37 pm

Hanno to start another thread to stir the board up.

What item have you bought in the last year which has given you the most satisfaction/value for money and how much did it cost?

Can't say I've really bought anything in the past year that was great IMO.

Failing that Ive bought a PS3 which is getting its value for money. £285 big ones with Little Big Planet 2. Chopped in the old PS3 40gig and a 120gig HDD for XBOX 360.

Quite enjoying the JRPGs that are currently out.

Engagement ring, price tag: $1740

It is the only one of its kind on earth. My fiancee and I designed it, and I assembled a team of a jeweler (St. Louis), and a woodworker, goldsmith, and gem-setter from Chicago to figure out how to make this ring work. The band is made of sealed, polished dark walnut. The weave is 14kt white gold, and the stones are tiny (1mm) emeralds going in every gap in the weave.

It is absolutely stunning, and given I price Ashley at roughly $BeyondValue, it has certainly been worth the money.

Thats beautiful. I love the combination of the walnut background to the white gold. :yahoo:

But then again I'm cheap, I didn't buy an engagement ring for my Wife, and we are simples folk (meerkats even) so she just had a plain gold wedding band. And we didnt have a big wedding, sort of spur of the moment and invited NO-ONE apart from the witnesses. :cheerleader:
My Dad is still convinced my mother came and he was the only person not invited....

OKAY you've been waiting to know what I bought last year that has brought a smile to my face everyday and given me pure value for money....
2 new teatowels for £2.99 each :woot:

And yesterday I bought a washing up bowl and new draining rank (£1.75 and £3.99 ) Which I have high hopes for.
We bought our last ones when we got married (yes instead of an engagement ring!) so after 15? years they were getting
a little tacky.

(edit:) Yes, that is a gorgeous ring. Beautiful.
The bill's a bit steep imho, though....

I bought two high(er) performance servos for my RC-car, but I haven't been able to use it much because of the cold and overall bad weather. :(

Weather is improving, though, so I will be racing it soon... ish... :cheerleader:

I wish it was a bit steep. In the states, the average store-bought engagement ring costs anywhere between $2000-5000. $1700 is well below the average for even a store-bought ring, let alone something custom.

The one you designed certainly looks a lot more special then anything you'd buy of the shelf in a store :)

The problem is that we had a really ridiculous marketing campaign by DeBeers back in the (40s?) (50s?) that went all out on saying that men should be spending three months of their salary on an engagement ring or they don't love the woman enough. Somehow, this got adopted as culture here, and even though nobody can really afford to spend that much (I'd be spending $18,000 on a ring theoretically... WTF?), it still skews the prices waaay higher than they should.

That being said, the engagement ring is also going to serve as her wedding band. I'm getting a simple walnut ring to match it, and that'll be it for us. :)
