Tell me about your country!

Postby [FDG]Sundae » Thu Apr 21, 2011 8:30 pm

Ashley and I are getting married in October (well, August legally so that we can live together [unmarried couples can't live together in my apartment complex], but October for ceremony), and there's one thing we both really, really have in common - desire to see the world and travel quite a bit. By travel, I don't mean hop on a tour bus and go see the Eiffel Tower, either. We'd like to hop on the tour bus, see the touristy sights, and then plop down a work / residency visa and stay for a few years to experience living there. Not France in particular, but not NOT France, either. We want to see quite a few places.

That's right... our desired "hobby" is living in other countries to experience them in more depth. Perhaps we'll find one we fall in love with and try to stay there. Who knows! :)

Assume skilled-labor permits aren't going to be an issue for a minute. (With my work and educational background, about the only barrier for immigration for me to most countries is if there are already qualified candidates in-country for my field, and they rightfully deserve consideration over me anyway, so it's no big deal in my view. :))

Assuming no issue on permits, please tell me about your countries! I don't mean "why should I come live there" because that'd be one heck of a conceited question (it would imply that somehow my presence is an improvement, which isn't guaranteed :p), but rather "please tell me what you like and dislike about your country". Ashley and I wish to travel quite a bit, and we like knowing what to see! One of my secret Santas this year (not from the Fudge / FnG one, though) sent me all sorts of touristy stuff from his hometown, Reutlingen. I've added it to my list of places for next year's trips, and I shall certainly be passing through. What is neat about where you live? What do you like / dislike? If you were to say you were proud of something about your (country, town, whatever unit of scale is most relevant to you), what would you say it is? That sort of thing!

I have been doing my own research on the side as well, but the human element tends to be the hard thing for me to study. Google and various ex-pat forums can only get me so much info about people, especially since so many of the ex-pat forums are filled with people whining because their new countries aren't absolute replicas of their home countries. Well duh! If I wanted a duplicate of my home country, I'd be staying home! :)

:worship: Thankie for the replies in advance. :worship:

I don't even know what that means.

Maybe I need to stay in the states longer, since I clearly haven't figured out the dialect yet.

Don't come here. Stay away. Be afraid.
(It's Goober Central. Remember the Andy Griffith Show at all?)

I would rather say Grolsch as heineken is a world wide brand. And something that should be approached carefully as it will destroy any taste that is left in your mouth.

My company accidentally agreed to sponsor me for a 2-yr work appointment basically anywhere I want to go where they have a site (and they have sites everywhere, so the gates have officially opened. ;) ).

I've gotten a green light from two sites in Germany (Freiburg im Breisgau is tempting!!), one in the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Canberra (out of nowhere whoa). There are "potentials" in other sites too, but a lot of them really suck or wouldn't make the top of my list. The Prague site is meh, and I have absolutely no desire whatsoever for Xinghua Province, China or Hyderabad India.

Still a year or two off, though. We have to get past the next round of layoffs first, and I wouldn't want to do any of them without at least getting a preliminary language course under my belt. Doesn't matter if everyone I'd be working with speaks English anyway (yay scientists) - it's rude to not at least try. :)

I'm trying to finagle a few more things, though... discovered that Italian citizenship laws actually let me apply for Italian citizenship via blood-descent since my paternal grandfather was born there and is Italian. My brother and I are now tracking down the giant pile of documents needed, but fortunately he was Catholic (which means they all exist because the Catholic church never...ever....ever throws away anything). The benefit of this that I would not even need to bother with the whole "permit" thing once that's done. Kind of cheating, but why not? It's not like I'm wanting to travel to mooch off of welfare or steal a cheap surgery. :D Plus I need to make sure my wife gets to come with me. That's a bit important... pretty sure she likes the idea of not being abandoned across an ocean.

Woo. Travel ahoy! :D

I hope it goes ahead for you - sounds like a great oppuntunity which you should grab with both hands quick!

On a different note: Are we going to see any snaps of Scotland in the Sun Yasmin?
I don't think we will believe it otherwise.

That reminds me of Little Britain, where the opening scene of the Scottish hotel sketches shows a swim-suited couple trying to sunbathe while it's pouring rain.
