"To The Moon" - an indie game by a friend of mine.

Postby [FnG] Nihilist » Fri Nov 11, 2011 5:33 am

A friend recently released a game he created called "To The Moon". Having just completed it, I'd like strongly recommend that anyone who enjoys emotive, strong storytelling check it out. The sound track is, frankly, better than the majority of AAA titles that get released.

Freebird's website is found here:

http://freebirdgames.com/to_the_moon/

There is a demo available at that link if you want to try before you buy. The sound track is found at:

http://freebirdgames.bandcamp.com/album/to-the-moon-ost

You can listen to the entire audio score there. It includes work by Laura Shigihara of Plants v Zombies fame.

Please check it out if you are at all in to story driven games - you won't regret it!

Some reviews of the game from various media sources (all highly positive):

I had a quick look at this and it looks quite nice.
The music is very impressive and as you say a lot better than the noisy **** you get on mainstream games.

Not sure if the game is for me as the whole 'interactive' story negates the question what can I shoot in it.
(You can't even kill the squirrel which I feel is a very negative, as I hate these flying vermin!)

If I am at a loose end (doh at work) I might download the demo for a better looksee :-)

I didn't buy the game, but I pre-ordered the soundtrack to this back in September or so. Nifty-sounding stuff. :)

The soundtrack really is good.

Kan's is not only really talented, he's also a really, really great person. There isn't an ounce of arrogance or bad attitude in him.

Definitely check the demo out...what's the worst that can happen?

To The Moon won best story for the 2011 Gamespot awards.

For an independant game largely put together by one single person, this is an amazing achievement.

It beat the following games to the title:

Catherine
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Portal 2
Xenoblade Chronicles

I'm really happy for Kan, he deserves every bit of recognition he is getting from this.

Wow, that's fantastic, Nihilist. Please pass along some congratulations from FnG.
Very impressive, especially when you throw out names like Portal 2.

Pass along some congratulations from SomethingAwful as well. His game passed under the radar there, largely, but it had one thread with incredible comments and everyone was floored by the ending.

Gao made one hell of a story out of that game.

I heard them raving about it (gamespot) in a podcast for half an hour or more. Got the demo but didn't get the time to play it yet due to skyrim, dark souls, gears 3, uncharted 3 and football manager 2012.

You made me more eager to try though.

"To The Moon" has now been released on Steam, and it's currently 2 bucks off at 7.99. You can also get the game/soundtrack bundle for 9.99; the soundtrack includes a track from Laura Shigihara, who did the Plants vs Zombies theme.

Well worth the money for a fantastically constructed game! It's currently rated 81 on Metacritic, with a user score of 8.7.

This game is worth it for the soundtrack, let alone any other enjoyment you might get out of that whole "playing it" thing. :D Go buy it!
