In SPACE you can't hear EVE knife you in the BACK!

Postby [FnG] Hanno » Fri Aug 02, 2013 12:36 pm

It's been a while since I've played a decent SpaceComTradePirateSim and there's a couple of the distant horizon:

Elite Dangerous:
http://elite.frontier.co.uk/

Online multiplayer Elite.
I remember the days (Nearly 30 years ago!) of playing the original wire frame Elite on a BBC B.
I also played Elite 2 Frontier on the PC - Emm 20 years ago.
So I'm sort of interested to see how fun it would be to get back out there in my Cobra MkIII
My only concern is they are pegging the price quite high, £30 for a digital copy :-(

Star Citizen:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/about-the-game
This actually looks as if its a bit ahead in terms of development and looks pretty interesting as well.

Two to watch out for if anyone is interested....

Maybe not but you can hear the sound of either Eve's ship crashing/exploding into your own or the sound of Eve chuckling away as he steals all your space booty!

was Elite that game where you flew through "mines" in your spacecraft, battling all kinds of monsters?

No you flew through space, battling pirates/police (and Thargoid Aliens) in ships.
The ships were all named after snakes, Cobra, Python, Sidewinder, Krait etc.
You started off with a rank of Harmless and had to get through ranks of mostly harmless , dangerous etc up to Elite.
In the original, your character name in the original was Commander Jameson and you started off with 100Cr in a space station over the planet Lave.
Oh and being 1983 it was single player btw , but the new one will be multiplayer :-)

Been keeping an eye on mr Roberts project. Not really because its the most successful kick starter (game?) project. But mostly because of my interest in it, I am a huge fan of Freelancer and not really any other game has managed to grasp the atmosphere in it, at least for me. I hope he will do so too in star citizen. So you can count me in for that game when it comes out.

The big question on Star Citizen is will we all be able to afford new PC's/graphic card upgrades by the time its out (estimated Nov 14)
It runs on Cryengine3 which is very demanding, so if you haven't had a new pc in the last year or so you might need to think on it.
Current MINIMUM specs are:
i3 530
GTX 460
8gb ram (but 16gb ram recommended!)

No specs or dates yet for Elite:Dangerous but I suspect the specs will be slightly lighter, but still new graphics card and memory for me.

I tend to just get a midpriced rig (about £500) and the only thing I've not been able to run lately
that I wanted to was Crysis 3.

But as work bought me three new PCS in the last 18months (one for work and two for home (one for each hand for when I work at home!))
I suspect I might have to pay for the upgrades myself all they are intel i5 chips with 4Gb
so just need to get more ram and a more powerful graphics card for one of the pcs at home.
16Gb ram is about £100 at the moment, Graphics card at about £175 - £200
But hopefully prices will come down or specs go up if I leave it 12 months.

Specs will go up in any case, the prices, well, the older hardware will get cheaper at least 8-)

Im going to take it easy for now and see how things turn out. Spent enough money this year already...

Will the pair of you stop talking about buying new PC's and upgrading, mines 3 years old this month and I've already got the upgrade itch again.

I think next summer will be the best time for upgrading just ready for the next crop of games.
Of course that's assuming your PC will survive BF4 in November....

Is there some kind of CPR for PCs? If so, perhaps good to know just in case you need it for your PC.

It will do but its just starting to show minor issues here and there, I guess BF4 will be the decider to see when I upgrade.

Woo Star Citizen update:
They have now released a playable hanger demo for the alpha supporter.
How exiting you can wander around the hanger and look longingly at the ships you have prepaid for but CAN'T actually fly yet.
woo hoo excitement , well maybe not, I suppose its progress but... not.
